Still the Bull
The bull is one of humanity’s oldest images.
Before it was painted or named, it existed in the shadows, shaped by light, movement, and chance. This project began when I noticed the recurring shadows of a bull appearing on the doors of the Arenes De Sommiers. This moment felt magical yet familiar, as if something primal was being revealed to me.
The work moves between these shadows and their contemporary counterparts: a butcher’s statue, employing modern sculpting techniques, a digitally created poster for the Camarguaise bull games, and the traditional architecture of the arena itself. Each presents the bull differently. Each shows the bull performing a role — commercial, cultural, symbolic.
Together, the photographs trace a lineage of image-making, from instinct to institution, from shadow to computer-generated poster.
